Doel van de cursus

Course goals

After successful completion of the course you are able:

1. to translate the Latin texts in correct Dutch or English

2. to analyze the grammatical and syntactical problems in the Latin texts;

3. to reflect in a critical manner on the form, style, content, and aspects of imitation in the Latin texts, with use of the subjects discussed in class and the secondary literature you have read.

4. to find and use medieval and neo-latin works in the three genres discussed in class;

5. to discuss the history of the  three genres from Antiquity until the Renaissance.

6. apply the concept of creative imitation in the analysis of medieval and neo-latin literature, specifically in texts belonging to the three genres.

Uitgebreide omschrijving

Imitatio as theory and method of production and consumption of Latin literarry texts from Antiquity until the Renaissance.

1 class theoretical background, with source texts in translation and discussion of an example of creative imitation in Antiquity (Vergil and Ovid);
1 class medieval epic (Arator),
1 class ancient and Renaissance didactic epic (Lucretius, Fracastoro),
1 class ancient and medieval satire/parody (Petronius, Missa potatorum),
1 class Renaissance elegy.

NB The definitive choice of genres and texts will be determined by mutual agreement of the teachers.

Examen informatie

Werkvorm
lectures/seminars.  The course will take place on the campus of Utrecht university or online.

exam part 1 (Latin texts) 50%
exam part 1 tests course goals 1-3

exam part 2 (literary background/ essay) 50%
exam part 2 tests course goals 4-6

The exam will normally consist of a written exam on campus, consisting of Latin passages (from the course) to be translated and questions about their content and literary context.

If the course will have to be given online, the exam will be an oral exam of 20 minutes (translation of and questions about a passage in Latin) and a take home exam.

6 EC: VU/ UvA-students read more source texts and secondary literature (1 ec) in consultation with the teachers.

  1. 5 ec = 140 hours:

– 15 hours class (5 classes of 3 hours) + 15 hours preparation (3 hours per class)

– 17 hours exam preparation + 3 hours exam

– 90 hours independent work >  ca. 72 hours primary literature (Latin), ca. 18 hours secondary literature

– 72 hours primary literature =  max. 2.160 lines of poetry or 72 pages of prose text = 24 hours per period, ie. max. 720 verse lines or 24 pages of prose text for each period

– 18 hours secondary literature = max. 216 pages English

NB The above numbers are based on the following norms:
– student reads 30 lines of poetry or 1 page (= ca. 30 lines) of prose text per hour
– secondary literature: student reads ca. 15 pages Dutch text, 12 pages English text, 10 pages French or German per hour.

Scans van primary sources texts and secondary will be made available to the students.
